My Journey as a Teaching Fellow
My Self Shobha. I am happy to share my experience about my 2 year fellowship journey. After completing my graduation , I was very confused about what to do next? So I joined one coaching class to get more knowledge about all the subjects. But it didn’t increase my thinking level. I was looking for something that could increase my knowledge. I would develop my overall personality while learning about the different perspectives of the subject. I am a person who lacks confidence so I have to overcome this. I have the interest to work in the education sector. So I joined the Vidyaposhak Yuva Fellowship.
Vidya Poshak Yuva Fellowship is an initiative to improve the educational quality of the students who are domiciles of Karnataka. The scholarship program aims to provide applicants with opportunities and reward credible students with several awards. The Vidya Poshak Yuva fellowship is for 2 years.
When I applied for the Yuva Fellowship they reach out me with an email. Then in the second round 3 tasks are there. First one is the we have to write an essay on the topic they already mentioned in the email, write the lesson plan on one topic and capture the video of the teaching after that we take one field visit and ask some questions to parents , children's or teachers. After this we have submit these tasks. Then in the 3rd round I participated in the group discussion. After that i attended the one test and then i attended the interview.
After the selection I attended the 1 month institute. It was nothing but training. At the start I face difficulty understanding the training. Because I just completed my graduation I didn’t have any knowledge about class execution , management and also I am poor in English communications in the beginning I didn't understand and I didn't interact well. Throughout the training I liked only Nidhi mam sessions. In the institute I faced some network issues. It was my personal problem. But at that time the team supported me.
After the training I shifted to Dharwad. Our program manager dropped us off at Kurubagatti. First day our headmaster was on leave so our P.E sir welcomed school environment was very nice. Big ground was there. At the start my students call me sister when our headmaster scolds them for that reason then students start to call me teacher. Students are very nice. I started to build a good relationship with the students. Some of the students are good in study and some of are not in the study but they have very much interest in the sports.
At the start our co-teachers were also very supportive. At the beginning they give the 6th class students responsibility. From that time on, all the 6th graders are close to me. I took one on call for all the students. In that one on call I understand some students' situations and their behavior.
Some students showed unhealthy behavior in the classroom. When I took the one on call they improved day by day.
In first year i took science ,math subject only but in 2nd year English subject also included. For me, handling the English subject is very difficult because no one student is better in English. Most Of the students didn’t know the alphabet also. So I start the classes from the alphabet.
In two years of my journey most of the student’s behaviors have changed a lot. I observed that one of my students changed a lot. At the start of the class he is not responding well and he is not participating in any activity but when I started to motivate him then he started to participate in all activities and also he was a very talented kid. He participated in the Raman award also. In the participation of my students in the Raman award function it was a proud moment for me.
We all are together to make the plan for the summer camp. I conducted the summer camp in our school. I called all my students to attend the summer camp. In summer camp we include the different activities like clay-modeling, best out of waste and giving information about nutrition food like this. Students enjoyed the summer camp. Students involved in the each activity. I also enjoyed the activities in the summer camp. My best memory in the summer camp was the last closing ceremony and taking a palm autograph from the students. It was a different experience for the students so they enjoyed it a lot.
I took a slam out loud session for the students. It is about the girls education.8 stories are there and I took sessions for 6th and 7th students. It was a different experience for me because at the starting some students didn’t show interest in the sessions and they didn’t know about the girls education importance. Each story inspires the students to get education. When I took the baseline almost student response was negative about girl education. I took different activities in the each sessions students enjoyed it. Students involved in the stories can feel the story and understand that story. After all the sessions students' mindset was differently changed it was happy for me because most of the students have a negative mind set about the girl education after the sessions they understand the importance.
I took the think tac sessions for the students. In think tac session students did the science experiments. All students were excited about this experiment. It was a different experience for me.
One of the good memory is my students participation in the Raman Award function. They have an interest in the participation of that competition. Finally they selected for the participation on that day me and my students are very happy. Because when we make the video my students and me take time to complete it.
In 2nd year I handled one community development project related to improving the English language for the students. For this project I did the proper plan. At the start I took the baseline assessment for the students. Most of the students didn’t write anything. Monthly I took tests for the students to measure their growth. It was a little bit heavy for me because I took classes for 1st to 7th standard students so I took help of 1 volunteer. She helped me a lot. From the community development project I learnt about how to do the proper plan for one project.
Our team is very supportive of me. Our mentor and program manager helped me when I needed help. In the first year our school teacher forced me to take the Hindi class for 7th students but I don't have enough knowledge about that subject so I opposed it but they were not ready to listen to my words' that time our program manager helped me. Fellow mentor also correct our mistakes and helped me to improve in all the aspects. I thank both of them and for my team for all the support.
In 2nd year I didn't face any difficulty in the parents circle. I had a healthy relationship with my parents. So they came to the parents meeting when we conducted the meeting. We invited the parents through the phone call. They just came and participated in that meeting. At the end they gave good feedback for us. I was happy.
In the 2nd year fellowship we conducted some competitions for the students. All the students participated in the competitions like science exhibition , children's day, science day and Independence day competition. In each competition i guide them about the competition they did very well. From that experience i know that my students are good but they need guidance when we give guidance for them then only they go through in the correct way.
Totally it was an amazing journey for me. I learnt so many things from this Fellowship program .I explored myself. Vidya Poshak Yuva Fellowship is a great opportunity for me to learn new things and improve myself.
